| Kauai Made Program |
|
Has anyone seen this familiar logo around town? It is the official logomark found on products certified by the County of Kauai to "officially represent the products made on Kauai, by Kauai people, using Kauai materials."
As an artist and vendor of a Kauai product, I have been a member for a year and a half and can proudly display this logo on my artwork. You can apply as a vendor, retailer, or both. It is a very interesting program that I am proud to be a part of because its main goal is to help visitors locate and purchase authentic and unique products made here on Kauai.
What are the benefits? First of all, your product or store will have a full web page listing on the Kauai Made website, www.kauaimade.net. By the way, I receive lots of hits from their website to mine. You can display their beautiful logo on your product and use other packaging and promotional materials. Most of all, you will be a part of their advertising. The program often gets featured in travel magazines around the world, and many local publishing companies are also a member. (Notice the Kauai Made "clickable" logo on the Garden Island Newspaper website.)
Beth Tokioka is the director of this program and the Office of Economic Development for the County of Kauai. She has done a fantastic job with the program and continues to make more opportunities available for us local vendors and retailers.
For more information on this program or to purchase a Kauai Made product, please visit the Kauai Made website! |
| Etsy.com Your place to buy & sell all things handmade |
This is a new discovery (Mahalo Kathleen!). A website where you can set up a shop (free), list items (only $0.20), and sell worldwide.
It's similar to eBay only there are no auctions, listing fees are way cheaper, and your item stays listed for months. The only catch is that you must sell only handmade items, supplies, or vintage items.
It is also a really nice community with over one million members who "heart" your item to bookmark it for future shopping! It's also a great place to BUY handmade items at a very reasonable price.
Check it out. You do need to become a member to make a purchase (setting up a store is not necessary). Joining is free and easy and most merchants (if not all) except PayPal. They also have a unique feature called "Alchemy" where users post descriptions of items that they would like to have custom made. It's fun and full of great ideas! I've already bought a few items and will definitely use the site to do future shopping for Christmas, birthdays, etc... My Etsy shop! |
| Summer Coloring Contest |
Color an "Under the Sea" scene by Marionette and win a set of "Tropical Crayons" made by my friend Lia at
MyKangaroo.
Here are the rules:
1. Click on this link " Coloring Contest" to print out the page to color. It should fit on one sheet of 8.5"x11" paper. 2. Write your name, phone number, and/or email address on the back of the printout. (I need to have a way to get in touch with the winner.) 3. Color your picture the best way you know how! 4. Mail to: Marionette, PO Box 709, Lawai, HI 96765. (Include a SASE if you would like the picture returned.) Or, drop it off at my studio. (Slide it under the door if I am not there.)
I will hang all art work in my studio until July 31, 2008, and will draw one winner on August 1, 2008. Notification will be by phone or email. The winner will receive the "Tropical Crayons". Good Luck!

| What is an ACEO? |
|
Ever since I started to sell my art on eBay and now Etsy, I keep seeing other artists selling ACEOs and wondered what they were all about. After a little internet research, I found that this is a new art craze with roots that go back a few hundred years.
ACEO stands for art cards, editions and originals. They are like sports trading cards for artists! They are similar to ATCs, artist trading cards, that are traded and not sold. In the 1700s ATCs were often used for advertising and for portrait miniatures.
Today, ACEOs are a very popular item being sold over the internet. The only requirement for creating one is that it should measure 2.5" x 3.5" (the standard size of a sports trading card). The medium used to create one is limitless - watercolor, acrylic, pencil, photography, oils, just to name a few. The support can also be on almost anything as long as its not too flimsy. Some examples are thick paper, wood, metal, plastic, etc...
ACEOs can be sold as originals, prints, limited editions, or even photography. If it is a limited edition, it should be numbered and signed on the back.
Collecting and making ACEOs sounds like a lot of fun. They are usually priced very reasonably ($5-$50), which makes collecting art very affordable. I'm going to produce some of my own ACEOs in the future, and I challenge you to do the same! |
