The passion flower as we know it in Hawaii is the flower of the passion fruit (or lilikoi) that is present in so many of the tropical fruit juices we enjoy.  It is a very interesting and intricate flower.  Its complex design has also been linked to the story of Christ’s Passion.  The ten petals represent the ten apostles present at the crucifixion; the filaments represent the crown of thorns; the five anthers represent the wounds; and the three stigmas represent the nails.

This piece has a special meaning for me since it was one of five paintings that survived a fire in 2001 that burned down my art studio.  I reframed the original and gave it to my good friend and art mentor whose gallery also burned in the same fire.
