Most
would agree that nothing is cuter than a momma hen and her baby chicks.
This scene of the chickens near the beach on
Kauai
’s south shore tells the story of the hen teaching her babies what they can
eat. How lucky they are to live in
such a beautiful place!
The most common question asked by visitors to
Kauai
is, “Why are there so many chickens everywhere?”
Chickens were originally brought to the
Hawaiian Islands
in canoes by the early Polynesians. These
“Polynesian” chickens are called “moa”.
After time, other domestic chickens were introduced to the islands.
The hurricanes have spread the chickens to remote places on the island,
and there is no predator (like the mongoose) on
Kauai
. There are so many, that they have
become the island’s mascot!
